From Ash Wednesday till Easter, people embark on a 40 day journey of fasting called Lent. Fasting can be anything from giving up social media, to giving up coffee, and abstaining from it until Easter Sunday. Catholics and Christians choose to take part in Lent. Majority of Catholics will get ashes drawn in the shape of the cross on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday. The priest will say,” “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”, as he draws a cross with ash on their forehead.
This is a reference to the verse in the bible Genesis 3:19. Which talks about God creating people. Lent is a time of reflection and allowing their needs to be met by God alone. It’s about realizing how they are in desperate need of a savior to fulfill them. Ash Wednesday begins lent with the reminder of humility. The 40 days allows for a greater celebration on Easter, and reminds them why Jesus came and died on the cross.
